Blessed Rain – again…

The other nite we got 2 inches of rain, and boy did we feel blessed. After several weeks with out a drop, our crops were suffering as well as all the farmers in the area. So 2 inches was a good start.  Now we could wait a couple of days before we got some more, so the land was able to absorb what it was getting.

But NO… and we really can’t complain because we’ve been without it for so long… but the next night we got another inch of rain. You don’t hear the corn gulping anymore – they did that with the first batch of rain, now it sounds like they are gurgling  or is that gargling :o )

Then last nite we got 1/4 inch – that’s ok – we’ve had enough for a few days. Of course, thunderstorms are being predicted every nite for the next several.

You should have seen me this morning, out picking tomatoes. We had about 30-40 plants, some more mature than others, as we have had to replant a few of the plants. I have about 2-4 plants that seem to have bottom blossom rot. Yet some tomatoes further down on the plant as fine – it’s strange. I’ve heard that comes from irregular watering. We’ve been watering the tomato plants with well water, so they’ve all gotten about the same moisture.

Any way – picture this – I’m in my mud boots – they are heavy enough to be walking in – very difficult to pull out of the mud! I had to find sections of the lane right next to the plants to walk, to avoid being covered completely with mud. It was tricky – I ended up being covered with mud any way. I didn’t fall, it was just difficult to stay clean…

I thought I picked a lot of tomatoes – actually more in the cherry and grape size, but a lot of regular tomatoes, and it’s only been 2 hours since our stand opened today, and half of the regular tomatoes are sold already. Of course, there’s a ton on the plants that have to ripen – I just hope they don’t all ripen at the same time!

We started selling sweet corn yesterday. Last year it was the 26th of June.  OK so 10 days late is not a problem, at least we have some to sell. It was looking pretty bad up til then! We’ve gotten all of our signs out, so now we need to hope that our regular customers come by.
