Yesterday, my DH decided to check the pumpkins in the fields to see if they were ready to be gathered – is that the correct term – for sale. Actually he had checked the fields a couple of days ago, and the ground was too wet from the rain we received in the Nor’easter last week. So today was the day to go check again.
Yep – they are ready! He drove his tractor with the front end loader over to the field and started gathering/picking/whatever. Because he had surgery a few weeks ago, he can’t do much lifting – but this seemed to work really well for him.
In he comes, down our driveway, loaded up. Pulls up to right in front of the stand and unloads them. Now it’s my turn to work. Hose them down, and sort them by size and set them out on the grass.
Ok, this seems to work – I’m wearing flip-flops – those came off fairly quickly, because I was sliding in them from all the water. Now my feet are bare and it’s ok, because I’m on grass.
My right foot is still recovering from the cat scratch infection – and this might not have been the best way to treat it – but the swelling has gone down, the redness has gone away, and I’m still taking the antibiotics. So as long as I keep hosing my foot down, as well as the pumpkins, and keep the dirt off my foot, I should be ok.
Oh, here comes DH with the next load – I’m ok, have done my job with the first load. This should be a snap.
Oops, here comes the next load – wait a minute – do you remember the episode for I Love Lucy where she is working in a chocolate factory? Well it’s not that bad, but I seem to be falling behind!
Each load has about 15-20 pumpkins, depending on size, and my DH is aiming to gather/pick 100. So after about 50-60, I’m dragging.
Whew, finally got them done and I’m whipped. Into the house and right into the shower. I’m soaked through and ready for bed. Oh, wait, it’s only 3pm…
