A little over a week ago, deer hunting season ended here in Suffolk, VA.
My DH is an avid hunter – has been since he was a kid, and he’s good at it too! He gets lots of deer each year – and let me tell you it helps. He also donates all the deer he kills to needy families or families with a lot of children. We have a number of those in the area.
His pruning of the deer population helps to prevent them from overrunning the area, getting sick or starving to death. It also helps keep them from eating our produce, the income of which we need to help supplement our retirement.
So here’s how our year works out -
March – September, we are growing and selling produce. DH is on the go from morning til nite.
October – December, is hunting season. DH is out every day except Sunday, hunting from morning til nite.
So that really leaves only January and February for me to get him to do some chores he’s put off the rest of the year. Not normal chores, mind you – he’s always working at something. But things like leaks, painting, fixing – all those things get put off until January and February – in between Football Games…..
So on January 7th, I was wonderfully surprised, when DH mentioned a couple of projects that were on my list – and he was going to take care of them.
I’m here to tell you that’s exactly what he did!
The first project was to add a really neat window with blinds over top of the window in the door leading out from the kitchen. The blinds are between 2 sheets of glass. The whole fixture fits right over top of the existing window frame. The blinds can be raised and lowered as well as closed or open.
The kitchen/eating area is right in front of that door. Normally there’s no problem with the light coming through the glass in the door. But sometimes the sunlight shines directly on the kitchen table – we noticed this when we had company over the holidays. Not only does it block out the sunlight, but it’s also a good privacy item.

The next project was the laundry area. The washer and dryer are in a closet in the hallway, and a shelf was installed when the house was built. My DH is 6 inches taller than I am and he has no problem reaching that high shelf. It’s really difficult for me to reach up as high as the existing shelf, and then try to bring down the heavy laundry detergent and bleach bottles. So I asked for a shelf lower down. Voila! He actually installed 2 – when we bought the shelf unit and hardware it came with 2. So he used both – isn’t he clever and thoughtful….

2 projects done in one day – boy are we on a roll!
I went ahead and made a new list with a few other things on it. I’m sure I’ll find more – but for now I don’t want to overwhelm the sweet guy!
