I love the internet

If you have been following my blog – you know that I’ve had nothing but problems with my dsl connection. Oh, over a month ago it was still working for the most part. It would go out every once in awhile – but I could live with that.

Then about a month ago, the dsl started loosing a connection frequently – sigh – watching the dsl light blink incessantly was not a pleasant sight.

Then, it would connect – ah – but let the sun go down, and it was out for the night. Tech #1 came, and did some tweaking and it worked fine – until he drove away!!

Now the dsl was down all nite long and didn’t come up until the sun was up. Sounds like a moisture problem to me!

Tech #2 and partner came, did some tweaking and it worked fine, until they went to their truck to leave. Run, Run, Run – I caught up with them before they drove away – back to look at the modem – I need a new one. They called in, and ordered a new modem.

The modem arrives, and I know that I need to get it configured, but that takes time, and I’m in the middle of trying to get orders out for Christmas deliveries.

Now I’m back to the internet being down all night and not up until sunlight, and then sporatic during the day – hey I’ve got to get online (was tempted to go to Starbucks) – to process credit card payments and print postage – ok – may not postage – will have to bite the bullet and pay more at the post office.

Break down and get the modem configured – and voila – for a few minutes – and then back to square one! Maybe cable is the way to go.

Remember my saying that moisture was a problem? Well, now my phone line has lots of static. And a couple of days after dealing with the static – it goes dead. No dial tone. I call in a service call – and am given an appt for 2 WEEKS. Gosh – how can I run a biz w/no phone service??

Ok, last dsl Tech is due in on the day after phone goes dead. Let’s see what he comes up with. I describe the symptoms – no service at nite, no dial tone on phone, lots of static if phone is working….

Come on guys – you have got to figure this out!!

This Tech – calls in a bucket truck and they started investigating our phone line as it ran along the road on the poles.

I’m sure that people who work for this company all know what they are doing when they work on the lines – however, when the Tech came back in to check my modem – he said that whoever worked on the lines last – had taken my phone line and instead of having it strung straight to the pole, it was wrapped around some other lines – the rubbing and wind had worn the insulation off of our phone line, and that was causing all our trouble.

We now have a good phone line, and since the fix – no problem with the dsl. As a parting note – the tech told me that he is going to be laid off at the end of January – he has been working for the company for almost 5 years – after the 5th year, the employee gets vested in the company. He’s being laid off so the company doesn’t have to start paying into a retirement fund for him, as well as others in the company. So he’s being laid off – the best tech I’ve had so far, and the other no so good techs and employees remain. What a world!

My DH is no longer complaining about lack of service – that’s got to be the best benefit!
