I belong to a cool group – Etsybloggers Street Team. One of the things we do, is to blog about something that interests us. This week’s blog subject is ‘Tell about your gardening plans for the upcoming growing season.’
I’m going to go out on a ‘limb’ here, and talk about my husbands gardening aspirations. Me – I have a black thumb, I can’t even get an artificial plant to last LOL
My husband grew up on a farm, in Ohio, spent many years in the US Navy, and worked part time for local farmers where ever he lived. Having 4 children and a wife to support on a Navy salary meant having to work more than one job. And my husband has never been afraid of work.
When we met, back in 1990, he was still in the Navy and had a garden in the back of his house. He also loved to grow flowers. After getting married in 1992, and then moving to Suffolk, in 1996, gardening was still a passion with him, even tho we worked full time.
In 2006, we both retired from the ‘real’ world, and his passion for farming knew no bounds. Now we run a produce stand during the summer and fall, selling all the produce that we grow. And each year, like this year, we concentrate on sweet corn, which is very popular in our area!
The first picture is of our tomatoes – this is the third year we’ve grown so many, had lots of customers asking for fresh tomatoes – so we now plant about 100 plants. Early producing, middle of the summer producing, cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes.
Next we have cukes – not the burpless kind. You will notice the ‘scarecrow’ at the end – this is to help keep the deer away.
This is squash – I think
And of course our sweet corn – we have many acres planted already and more to do (dh has to do)

And here is the farmer home from the fields – actually, he is in and out all day – as he has several tractors that do different jobs.
I love to watch him work
And to know that we will have fresh vegetables soon, is great! We love fresh produce. And if you are in our neighborhood, do stop by – we love to meet new people!

Oh how nice! This brings back childhood memories for me as my dad always had a garden so we had fresh produce and my mom taught me how to can and make jam so the goodness lasted far into the winter!
Sandi, I can’t believe how much land you farm! And it looks like fabulous soil. Wish I lived closer–I’d be a permanent customer!
I’m envious of your garden! I would buy produce from you anyday!! Where in Ohio did you guys live?
We have a garden ourselves and if we have any “extras” we’ll be selling at the Farmer’s Market! We have 40 tomato plants. Most of our garden is a slow go this year but I’m hoping things will improve. We received some very strange weather this Spring. I also grow a “lot” of flowers that we sell at the Farmer’s Market…tulips, irises, rose of sharon, sedum, daylilies, torch lilies, liriope, pines, maples and some herbs….lemon balm, oregano, spearmint, sweet basil, cilantro. It definitely keeps us busy during the Summer.
