Recently I switched from a non-flip cell phone to a flip cell phone – because I was constantly pushing buttons and starting a call! I took a look at the smart phones when I was trying to decide which phone to get – and although I thought all the apps and bells and whistles were nice, I figured since I’m home most of the time and get my emails on my computer – why would I need to have a smart phone with email, etc. Plus I already pay through the nose for my cell phone service, I couldn’t justify the added data charges.

I went to visit my sister over Thanksgiving and she has a smart phone and raved about it! But again, they travel a lot, drive back and forth to work – so for her and her husband, it’s a great tool.

I have no complaints about my cell phone, however…

This morning as we are driving to the grocery store to do our weekend shopping, I kept hearing a strange noise. I thought maybe it was coming from the radio – and when I turned down the radio – the sound disappeared. But once we stopped the car, I heard the noise again. It was beginning to bug me. We went into the grocery store and I’m walking down an aisle when I hear that blasted noise again. OMG – my phone is taking pictures. How the heck did that happen?? You should see all the pictures my camera took w/o my permission. Of course, my phone was in my pocket – so how much could it have seen LOL.

There is one good thing about this camera phone. I have a Kindle – and avoid buying paperback and hardback books. But there are always new ones on the shelf in the grocery store. So I’ve started taking pictures of the new books, then I can look at them on line and decide if I want to read them, and I don’t have to go searching for books to read – as the photograph already has the title and author.

Now if I could just figure out how the phone started taking pictures on it’s own.

I read all the time. I go through books like water. Many are mindless, some are mysteries, others action or suspense.

Last year, I read a trilogy of books by Susan Beth Pfeffer. About something hitting the moon and the resulting aftermath. Those were a good read. Maybe a little far fetched, but kept my attention.

Recently, I read Alas Babylon by Pat Frank. A book that was written during the cold war, about what would happen to the world, if nuclear bombs were detonated. Remember the cold war? And the drills in school, where you ducked under your desk? It was riveting and very disturbing knowing that even though we no longer have the cold war, there are many countries in the world who would love to have the chance to do what our enemies in that book did.

I’m beginning to think I am a glutton for punishment. I just finished reading One Second After by William Forstchen. By the end of the book, I was sobbing so hard, that I had to re-read the last chapter again this morning. And it wasn’t any easier. While the scenario of Pat Frank’s book is believable, One Second After tells what happens to the US when EMP – electronmagnetic pulse weapons – are used. And besides being a terrible weapon, the fact that no one in control seems to think it’s something to be concerned about, is frightening.

I’m ready to read something mindless!

I go to a book sale each month – sponsored by patrons of our local library. It’s a good way to help the library as well as get used books cheaply.

The book sale used to be held in a long one story building – with lots of shelves and a large variety of books to browse through. It was also damp, and dusty, and poorly lighted – but it persisted.

Recently that building was going to be renovated and sold, so the library patrons group had to find a new place. They were able to secure (I don’t know for how long) a building that used to house a hardware store that went out of business – because it couldn’t compete with Lowes.

When I went to the last book sale – I was delighted that the building was in much better shape, but disappointed that all the books that had been moved were not on display. It made it difficult to find a nice selection of books to get to take home. I did manage, though, to get a bag load.

One of the books that I brought home is called Hannah’s Dream.

The title sounded familiar, but I knew that I had not read it yet. Was this one of Oprah’s picks?

I highly recommend this book – a story about Hannah, an elephant, and her keeper and the woman responsible for bringing them together. It is heart warming, funny, and wonderful to see the bond that Hannah and her keeper form. I won’t tell you any more – don’t want to spoil it for you!

I stayed up late last nite to finish reading it. It was that good!

Earlier this month I wrote about getting an e-reader, and the various readers available.

Today I went to the Friends of the Library book sale. They had just moved into another building, as the last one they were in, was being sold. Now they are in a building that used to house a hardware store – that is no longer in business. It was a nice building, very roomy, with heat, and not dusty, damp smell.

When I walked out of there – I had spent $20.00 and I had bought 18 books – about half paperback and half hardback. There is no way I could have done that for e-books – at least for the ones that I had found online. The other thing about seeing the books in person is that I can stand there, and read the inside flap of the jacket to see what the book is about. Seeing the covers makes me want to find out if that is a book I want to read.

Looking at books online to find the ones I want to read, amongst the thousands of books that are there – seems a little overwhelming and takes way too much time, to browse through. So I think I’m going to continue to read books that i can hold in my hand, instead of on an e-reader. I still have room on my book case, and when I’m finished with these I can take them back and my shelf is ready to store the next batch.

Talk about saving money… the books are cheaper, I don’t have to invest in a gadget, and I can use my money for something else that I want. Haven’t decided what that is yet – but I’ll let you know.
