Getting so close to the holidays, I’ve been wrapped up in getting things organized and shipping out the last minute orders from my website Sandi’s T’s. It’s always fun to find out what kind of things my customers are thinking of for gifts.

But despite all that hustle and bustle of the season, I wanted to share a recipe with you, that I’ve loved to use since my 2 daughters were small children. So we are talking about 25-30 years worth of use.

When my girls were small, we used to take a whole weekend, and make different kinds of cookies and breads to use for guests coming over, as well as give as gifts during Christmas week. We would make “M and M Cookies”, “Snickerdoodles”, “Oatmeal Cookies”, “Pumpkin Bread” and my favorite Gingerbread Cookies.

Recently a friend of mine asked if I had the recipe for the gingerbread cookies and I dug it out and it came from the 1970′s in a magazine. Since there is nothing on the recipe page that indicates which magazine, it could be Family Circle, Ladies Home Journal or Good House Keeping. Which ever one it was, it’s well creased from being used for some many years.

Old-Fashioned Gingerbread Men

Early in the day or up to 1 week ahead:

1. In large bowl with mixer at low speed, beat until just mixed, constantly scraping with with rubber spatula
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 1/4 cups molasses
3 eggs
1 cup button or margarine, softened
1 TBSP baking soda
1 TSP salt
1 TSP ground allspice
1 TSP ground cinnamon
1 TSP ground cloves
1 TSP ground ginger
3 cups all-purpose flour
Increase speed to medium; beat 2 minutes, occasionally scraping bowl with spatula. With wooden spoon, stir in 5 or 6 cups all-purpose flour to make a stiff dough.
Divide dough in half and wrap with plastic wrap. Use dough immediately or refrigerate to use within 2 days.

2. Preheat oven to 350. On lightly floured surface, with lightly floured rolling pin, roll half of dough 1/8 inch thick. With 8 inch long gingerbread man cookie cutter, cut as many cookies as possible (I used several different sizes and of course both men and women )

3. With pancake turner, carefully arrange cookies on lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake 12 minutes until edges of cookies are firm; immediately loosen cookies from sheet and remove to cool on wire racks. Repeat with remaining dough and reroll scraps.

4. To decorate cookies: Prepare frosting. Spoon frosting into pastry bag with small writing tip. Use frosting and raisins to decorate cookies. Makes about 2 dz or more.

Ornamental Cookie Frosting; In small bowl with mixer at low speed, beat 3 3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar, 1/4 tsp cream of tartar and 3 egg whites until just mixed. Increase speed to high and beat until mixture is stiff that knife drawn through mixture leaves clean-cut path.

Enjoy – just writing the recipe and reviewing it, makes my mouth water!
