We are in the midst of taking down the tents that we use for our produce stand. Actually there are 2 tens, 1 a 10×10 and 1 a 10×15.

The last few years, we have used the 10×10 – that I had bought when I was doing craft shows. It worked well, but the problem that we had, is there was no shade for the watermelons that we sold.

To this year we used the 10×10 to shade the watermelons and bought a 10×15 for the rest of the produce.

DH had built 3 tables to hold all the produce – he did a smashing good job – they are sturdy and each table is designed to hold a different variety of produce.

So we are in the midst of taking them – actually I started by taking down the sides that we had up for shade. That was done with no problem, was cleaning up the area – had 2 blue tarps draped over the fence that we could use as needed.

Pulled one of the blue tarps down and draped it over a little wagon. Yuk – a horrible looking bug. DH thinks it’s a diamond back moth – but I think it’s more along the lines of a spider. The pics are not really great – I was afraid to get too close…

And as if finding this bug wasn’t enough for one day – after I gathered the eggs and washed them – I found one of them was completely round – and no, it’s not a golf ball or ping pong ball!

Here we have the round egg and next to it a 2-3 yolk egg (DH doesn’t like those – don’t know why not – they taste the same!)

Every day, I go to gather the eggs, and I’ve been watching a volunteer watermelon plant growing.

We grow watermelon, and my DH loves to eat watermelon – and well, now you know where the seeds go!

Yesterday, when I went to gather the eggs, the light must have been just right because I saw 2 small watermelon growing.

I couldn’t pass up the chance to take photos and share them.

As you can see in this photo, the vine is growing along the ground and up the fence that is outside the chicken houses.

Here, you can see a small watermelon peeking through the leaves of the vine.

Here’s another small watermelon – it’s no more than about 5 inches across.

I love watching things grow and I always love to see volunteers making a return!

The other day, I went to gather the eggs and found this:

I tried to get close to take a good picture, and the dang spider started crawling all over – I backed up quickly!

This spider is called Black and Yellow Garden Spider, Writing Spider, Banana Spider or Corn Spider.

The web of the yellow garden spider is distinctive: a circular shape up to 2 feet in diameter, with a dense zigzag of silk.  I’ve seen the zigzag before when I’ve seen this spider – but it wasn’t formed yet when I took the pictures.

You know, we have a produce stand.  Right now we are selling sweet corn, and watermelon – we’ve had lots of different vegis during the summer, but it’s kind of winding down for right now.

Anyway, I had a customer call this morning to pick up 100 ears of sweet corn. Many of our customers do that, so they can freeze the corn.

So, I’m going outside to bag up the corn, and found

This praying mantis has a grasshopper in her hands – I stood watching for awhile, the grasshopper was still alive when I was taking these shots.

That all happened about an hour ago, and as I look out the window – I can still see her there.

I just went out to look closer, and she’s still there, enjoying her meal.

True nature. The fact that she latched herself to our fence instead of resting on the grass, is a delight!
