Thursday evening, as I was getting ready to go to bed, I felt a little fluttering in my heart – it doesn’t happen very often, but I have had it before – it causes me to cough a little and usually it goes away. But this time, the fluttering turned into heavy beating – I felt like my whole body was vibrating. I took an aspirin – thinking maybe it was the onset of a stroke. I just turned 65 – could be age related. I lay down and it felt worse, got back up, and went and made myself a cup of tea. Meanwhile, the pounding was steady. No pain, I smiled at my hubby and talked with him with no problems – sure signs that it’s not a stroke.

But after a few minutes, we decided to go to the emergency room. It wasn’t going away and I was becoming scared.

Thinking back to my husband’s first wife – she went to the hospital from work complaining of chest pains, and had a heart attack in the hospital and died. Hubby and I looked at each other, and I know that was going through his mind.

When we got to the emergency room – there was a long line waiting to check in. This is on a Thursday nite at around 9:30pm. Where did all these people come from. As well, the waiting room was already filled up.

I leaned against the wall as I waiting, feeling light headed and wondering if I was going to last waiting to check in. By now, I’m sure my face was as white as a ghost. By the time I got to check in – I figured I was going to pass out and I told them so. Immediately they got a wheelchair, put an arm band on me and wheeled me into the emergency room and got me in a bed. An IV with medication was started – no fooling around here! My heart rate was twice what it should have been!

I was told that I would be staying at the hospital – by now it’s 11:30 and I told hubby to go home. No need for him to be up all night. I finally got a room at 1:30am. By this time, the medication had done it’s thing and my heart rate was back to normal. And thus started the around the clock care – with people coming in the room at least every hour to 2 hours to check on me, take blood and my blood pressure.

I ended up staying another day, as they wanted to make sure the meds were going to keep me stabilized. I finally got to go home yesterday at almost lunch time.

The cardiologist told me I could start back to exercising on Monday. With as tired as I’ve felt yesterday and this morning – it may take longer than Monday for me to get my energy back for exercising. But that’s ok – I’ll try to take it slow, and rest as much as possible (those of you who know me, know that’s going to be difficult for me, as I love to work!).
