Children's Items
Sandi's T's has thoroughly enjoyed providing lots of well-made, great products for babies and toddlers, plus cooking aprons and custom tees kids love. We've taken great pride in offering you safe products that you, your children, and grandchildren can enjoy without fear of dangerous materials or harmful ingredients of any kind.
Unfortunately, our government has passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, (CPSIA) initiated in an effort to protect our children from shoddy workmanship, harmful chemicals, etc. used in toys, clothing and products for kids made primarily in other countries. It has actually created an environment lethally harmful to good business people in the United States.
This law requires anyone making anything for any child under the age of 13 to do extensive labeling and testing of each item they make. The labeling must include the chemical makeup of every item used to create the item, and then the item must be tested by an outside source and proved to be safe before selling.
The list requires the complete makeup of each material used, including dyes, paints, etc. and can run up to 50 pages for one hand-painted item! Companies that make a gazillion of the same item may have ONE tested and then ALL the items are covered. A person making a custom tee has to pay the same cost for EACH item they make, since each is different. The cost of the labeling and testing is in the stratosphere. If someone has not complied with the law, they can be heavily fined by the government for each violation.
This is another example of our government trying to help us - or LOOK like they're helping us - while actually causing untold side effects and unintended consequences. Many good people who make handmade or custom products for babies and children under 13 will simply be forced out of business. Many people have already stopped selling anything for a child under 13 out of fear. If the government decides to look at you, you'll go bankrupt trying to defend yourself, even if you've done everything "right!"
The CPSIA law has exempted the big company - who outsourced their toy making to China and caused the problem in the first place - from having to comply with the law.
The result of this law is that you will have fewer choices for cute things for your kids, and the things you CAN find will cost more. With great regret, I have closed the "Children's Item" section of Sandi's T's. I simply cannot afford to be caught on the "wrong" side of this onerous legislation.
